Kerli at 2011 Lollapalooza Festival (August 5-7)

Eminem, Coldplay, Foo Fighters To Headline 2011 Lollapalooza

The lineup for the 2011 Lollapalooza Festival has been announced, and, as expected, it’s chock-full of big names.

Eminem, Coldplay, and Foo Fighters are among the biggest names selected to headline the three-day music bash, taking place August 5-7 at Chicago’s Grant Park.

Cee-Lo Green, Muse, Cold War Kids, Kerli, Grace Potter and The Nocturnals, and a solo Patrick Stump are just a few other names announced for the festival.

After a lot of water, I headed to the tree canopy center of the park where the BMI stage was and Kerli was performing. The shade, the light breeze and the water all made me feel better as I watched 15 or so minutes of Kerli’s performance. She’s a pop star through and through, in the same pattern and on the same track as a Lady Gaga. Just a mere few years ago Lady Gaga performed at a small side stage at Lollapalooza in front of a small crowd, and look where she is today. As I spent the day joking around on Twitter, Kerli was like a gift from the joke gods. I refused to crack any jokes at the time because they were too easy. Here though, let me throw a couple out at you. Kerli’s keyboard player wore a surgical mask the entire time. He was clearly hoping to avoid being infected with Kerli’s bad pop music. And hey, Kerli’s guitar player looks a lot like former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha. My how the mighty have fallen.

A different, if no less passionate, crowd gathered for Kerli on the smaller BMI stage: The Estonian Bubblegoth star, in her latex Lolita pinafore and moonboot platforms, looks like an anime notebook doodle brought to life, and sings like one too. Slavic-Gaga jams like “Walking on Air” and “Army of Love” aren’t really made for outdoor afternoons in the baking Midwestern sun, but these fans clearly didn’t care. (Random note: Kerli also recently co-penned Demi Lovato’s July iTunes smash ”Skyscraper”; get that Disney money, girl.)

Allow us to overlook, for a brief moment, Kerli's Gothic Lolita-inspired outfit and pink-streaked hair, and concentrate on the giant marshmallow-like creations on her feet. We’ve got to give props to the Estonian singer, who is standing upright (somehow) on six-inch high platform sneakers (Nike Dunks, no less!) trimmed in pink lace and pearls. We really, really want to know where the girl shops.
