Starting out
By Poetic.
In my years of writing poetry, I've had a thirst for getting better. I have done so (Oh my gosh, I don't want to show you some of my early works.) and I've found out what makes it easy to grow as a poet.
Only two things.
1) Write more.
2) Read more.
Pretty simple. Don't worry about the technical stuff, that will come after you do those two things. Poetry has many different styles, and everyone has a unique writing voice, but there is similar things that link all poets together. It's important to find the things you like about other people's things so you can let it influence what you do. My personal suggestions to you are Shel Silverstein, Shakespeare, and lots of the stuff here. That is a forum for a video game, dorky, I know, but the community of poets and authors are incredible. Some of the work found there is mind boggling. However, as important as it is to read read read, it's best to read things you like. So read a few poems everywhere you go, if you like 'em, read more, if you don't, forget it.
So, next. After you've written and read like crazy, is to continue to read and write like crazy. Well, and pay a little more attention to the technical stuff. You likely have it down, but if you don't just ask someone for help. Or look at the help given to others. This is my thread. I've been critiqued by a GREAT poet on page 2. If you need help, you could always compare your work to the critique they gave or look around at other people's critiques for other people and compare to there.
Now, get reading and get writing!

Wow I find it shocking that you'd mention Shel Silverstein because I loved to read his stuff as a small child and I've been looking for his work over the past week.
